Planning:

I decided on a makup scheme to match and represent the theme and shirt, I wanted one eye blue and the other purple/pink. when the eyes were closed I wanted them to have painted eye pupils so that the models eyes will always be looking, even if they are closed. along with the the eyes I wanted to represent the face on the shirt by having one set of bottom eye lashes painted on the right eye. I took inspiration from my cats markings on his face because they display a contrast of emotions, they almost look like a mask forcing a facial expression which I thought would be good for showing simulation of feelings etc.

I wanted the hair to be somewhat futuristic, so I went with space buns but split them into three. for the rest of the clothes I wanted them to emulate the colour scheme. Orange shorts with orange tights and a green top underneath the shirt.

shirt

some ideas i started for the shirt contained creating an abstract suggestion of the face on the back, embroidering flowers up the arm and over the shoulder or stitching a hand print onto it.

I used a photo of a tile pattern I made of coloured paper and warped it through premiere pro, I layered the pieces I created with acrylic pours to create a visual stimulation of colour and patterns. Along with it I recorded the sound of a singing glass but distorted it by using modulation and a few other effects. this created an alien type sound along with the gloopy textures created with the visuals.

I recorded the sound of glass ring notes since it was music i could easily create, using objects in my home and not using a musical instrument. I explored how to stimulate touch, this was possible and effective with physical work but was not possible with video work which was the main goal. I used the results of my physical work in the visuals of the video so that it was represented. I attempted to tackle stimulating smell by using connotations to smell, so even though i couldn’t physically display smell, the least i could do was suggest it. The main and obvious connotation was flowers and nature.

I recorded a projected live recorded of my phone camera, creating an infinite camera, while doing this i had colour changing lights flashing in the room. This had an unusual effect of creating colour strobes back and forth due to the slight lag in live recording. This was effective because it created similar visuals i had researched due to rave projections and lighting sequences.

I used premiere pro to edit the visuals and sound together. Distorting each in their own way. I layered the chequered optical illusion alongside scans of my pieces i made with acrylic which created texture to the visual. I distorted the chequered piece making it look like it was melting and moving.

I used tissue paper to clean up ink spillage from the carpet, and it had interesting patterns on it so I decided to use it with a paper mâché technique, I think it was really effective. The patterns and textures were really interesting especially after adding a flower I had found earlier in the day this helped stimulate smell. The patterns from the tissue had a similar effect to petals and other shapes in nature so it is a very stimulating visual and smell piece.

26.3.19

My final experiment was the acetate, i decided to do this because i wanted to be able to see the under side because in theory i thought it might be more interesting since the thicker, hence heavier, acrylic would stay at the bottom creating vivid patterns. I also figured i would be able to peel the dried acrylic off creating an acrylic material. Neither of these theories were correct.  I was already hesitant about the experiment being successful because i noticed once i completed the pour that the acrylic was not staying in place on the acetate, it was running off the edge of the acetate and losing the pattern. When I arrived back to it the next day I was surprised to find it hasn't dried. This is what i thought but actually the gloss medium in the green and matte medium in the purple had created a glossy wet aesthetic. This was really exciting, i investigated it more and found that areas of the acetate had come through the acrylic creating splotches of see through areas which i also didn't intend but was actually happy with. Due to the separation of the acrylic in areas, it meant the whole layer of acrylic wasn't in one piece and the splotches were very thin and delicate meaning there is no way i could peel the acrylic off the acetate with it splitting and losing the areas of clear acetate that were really interesting.

After evaluating my experiments, I want to do an acrylic pour with multiple cups keeping colours that can't mix separate. I also have grown to like the look of the dark blue from the first acrylic pour, especially alongside the orange. I might try using navy paper to keep the consistency of the dark background because i think the black paper is more successful than the white. I want to think more about the colours im using and what they stimulate in the viewer, and how they interact with each other.

I find it bizarre, when does it just become life, like it's scary. It's so nice that VR could be used for good, helping with ptsd, dementia but when does it just become vanilla sky. Do we really want to be in a simulation? Isn't life just a simulation? Why do we want to be in “real life” because realistically life is just a simulation. It stimulates every sense. And not in a sad way that life isn't real or anything in a way that you should accept simulations because for all we know our brains are literally in a human sized VR set with full stimulation. In order to create a full simulation you just need to create a human body like we are the ultimate stimulation. This does NOT mean we are fake but factually we are stimulating our senses which are sending signals to our brain exactly like a simulation sends the message to our senses. Like its just an extra step. If anything a simulation once it reaches full capacity is just life. A virtual life. Its human beings able to control our stimulation, change the game or server.

I experimented with plasticine because I found that it easily keeps its form which is something I was struggling with when working with acrylic and liquid. I could also press my palm and finger prints into it creating a sense of touch so if you were to feel it, then it was almost like the person touching it is feeling my hand. I really liked this concept as a stimulant because in a sense its feeling what touching feels like.

IMG_3925.JPGIMG_6097.jpg.1

I also like that I can keep the colours really sperating creating a crisp edge similar to the tile pattern I created are you can see how colours interact next to each other without them actually mixing together.

I decided to go buy gloss varnish in order to recreate my past technique but the reason i used the gloss varnish was because i already owned it hence didn't have to spend money or travel to purchase it. I realised if i was going to buy anything i should buy the standard medium used for acrylic pours. This also meant i had a little more freedom with experimenting because i haven't used this before. After I purchased pouring medium, and created five different pots of colour to alternate with, the first one I did was on a styrofoam board and wasn't very successful because the medium all soaked through the styrofoam meaning it lost quite a bit of detail and colour. The mix was also not exactly right I think there wasn't enough acrylic for the medium.

IMG_6103.jpg.1IMG_6099.jpg.1

The second pour was done on smaller pieces of black paper and was a lot more successful because the acrylic was really vivid and held its form, not becoming muddy and creating a visually interesting piece. I repeated the acrylic pour on the black paper several times to see different outcomes. I left them to dry along with the styrofoam board over night.

IMG_6113.jpg.1IMG_6112.jpg.1

The issue with the unsuccessful pieces was that i was using too many colours, and the colours were mixing too much. I want contrasting colours or more solid individual colours. I think next i want to trying separating the colours into multiple pours. If i segregate the colours that don't mix well then they won't create unwanted colours. I want to use different cups on the same piece. Some were successful and some were not very interesting. I used a range of materials, and even kept some of the excess that fell on the protective plastic to see how this turns out when it dries.

6.3.19

It definitely reminded me of the drawing i did of neurons in my hand sketchbook. I left it to dry for 24 hours, however due to evaporation of the water and the thickness of acrylic, a lot of areas were now cracked or split. This could be interesting as a technique but i think it looked more interesting before the cracks appeared.

5.3.19

The process i did for the acrylic pour was, i did it once and it failed horribly and in my past experience i've not had pouring medium but i had gloss varnish and matte medium which was successful, tried to recreate but was missing the gloss varnish, i decided to add water but made it really bad made all the colours mix into a grey/blue colour, which was not the intention. I also didn't have the right set up and when i tried to flip the cup on the canvas, the canvas tipped and poured the mixture over the plastic protecting the floor, most was wasted basically. I managed to salvage it by putting paper on top of the spilt acrylic, which created a new pattern on the pieces due to the separation from the page. I tried a second time, which again failed. All the colors mixed together and made a brown orange colour which had no pattern whatsoever.

IMG_6096.jpg

Because there was layers of paint and they were still wet, it meant when I dropped paint on the piece, it created an effect that looked like neurones I continued this over the canvas creating a pattern that looked like some kind of scan of nerves. The colour scheme was something I didn't really like but the effect of it was really interesting

IMG_6094.jpg.1

Since I didn't like the colour scheme created I decided to invert the photo,

image.png

I am a lot happier with this colour scheme, I think it resonates with the colours of psychedelics and neurones far better and visually is a lot more striking.

Meeting with yourself -

What is it you need to achieve this week?

I need to create physical outcomes in response to my research. I want to create a visual piece that also stimulates another sense, even if it's not in an obvious or intense way. I think I will create some acrylic pours after researching colours that are effective at connotations to taste. Acrylic pours will be effective at stimulating the eye because they are simliare to psychedelic trips.

what do I need to enable me to achieve my outcome?

I will need to find a way to create an acrylic pour, first I will see if its possible to create an alternative without pouring medium since I don't own any at the moment. however if it is unsuccessful or there is no way to do it then I will buy pouring medium. I will use acrylic I already own and a canvas that is spare from other projects. Before fulfilling the acrylic pour I will have to decide on the colours I want to use that stimulate or connote taste.

what is working well?

So far the optical illusion tile pattern was successful at stimulating the eye, when looking at it, it makes the eye feel intense and the colour choice was very effective as the colours bounce off each other which is to do with the way the eye perceives the colours.

what needs to be altered/revised?

So far I don't think I've created enough for it to be revised but I think developing what I have is key at the moment, everything has been experimental so my work hasn't been necessarily unsuccessful or successful, however it has been really useful. I definitely need to do more research into optical stimulants and how to incorporate other senses, a key sense to look into is smell. the way it is connected to all the other senses and how to stimulate smell with my art since I think it will be the most challenging.

what do I need to read/see/visit to achieve my goals?

I'm going to visit the Kaleidoscope exhibition at the Saatchi gallery, Read books about colour schemes.

26/02/19

I decided to create a piece inspired by the colours of the last piece, the baby blue and pink. I decided to add green to the mix to see how it reacted with the other colours because I think only having two colours was not stimulating enough, however after the piece was created they mixed together to create a different colour palette than initially intended.

IMG_6090.jpgIMG_6092.jpg.1

I think the end result was something akin to what synesthesia is imagined, which is an interesting concept since its a visual way to represent sound. I think it overall looked really interesting due to the way the colours reacted and mixed.

21.02.19

Optical illusions-

I researched optical illusions in the library and decided to create my own, using a tile pattern with psychedelic colours. The colour combination made the tiles bounce off the eyes, the blue became more electric and the pink almost 3D. This pattern was really successful at creating a piece that stimulated the eyes.

start of initial ideas

psychedelics etc are you experienced psychedelics book

I've decided to explore the human body and the way the senses are stimulated. I want to create a piece that stimulates all the senses. Creating a video already checks two senses, sight and sound. in order to incorporate the other senses I will have to research how to stimulate smell, touch and taste in a 4D medium. however I think to set the ball rolling I should research how I want to stimulate the eyes with visuals and what sounds will be effective.

Starting with sight I'm going to be researching psychedelics. Psychedelics are a way the eyes perceive visuals and can but created from the mind. Another way I could stimulate the eyes is through optical illusions, they can make the eye see things that aren't there and make the eyes perceive things in a different way than reality. After going to Anna Liber x Four tet exhibition I would like to explore how to play music during the presentation of my piece. In order to stimulate the other senses I'm considering to create an installation piece that incorporates carpet or some kind of material. Possibly projecting my video on a surface that can be touched. Right now the only way I can imagine stimulating taste is through food. This would be complicated and somewhat unsatisfactory due to the consideration of allergies, what would be cooked in an artistic way that isn't too easy.
